Building a climate risk intelligence platform

Our client, Rebalance Earth, needed a scalable climate risk intelligence platform to help businesses and investors make more informed decisions regarding nature-based investments. We developed a secure, user-friendly solution that integrates complex environmental and geospatial data into an interactive, map-based interface. The platform allows teams to analyse risks such as flooding and drought, compare datasets and pinpoint areas with the greatest potential for climate resilience and nature restoration.

Challenges and business needs

Rebalance Earth aimed to boost confidence in nature-based investments by offering dependable insights into climate-related risks such as flooding, droughts and water quality issues. In order to grow effectively and attract investment for impactful environmental projects, the company needed to improve the security, usability and infrastructure of its platform.

As an early-stage start-up without an in-house technology team, Rebalance Earth required an experienced technology partner to take ownership of its existing solution, address technical challenges, and develop its vision into a scalable digital product.

The key challenge lay in integrating large volumes of environmental data from multiple public and proprietary sources and transforming it into meaningful geographic insights. The platform had to enable internal teams to identify areas most vulnerable to climate-related hazards to help guide investment decisions and support nature restoration initiatives.

Our responsibilities

Working closely with the client team, we developed a platform that can collect, process and visualise complex geospatial and environmental data sets via an interactive, map-based interface. The solution allows users to analyse flood and climate risk, compare different data sources and pinpoint locations where restoration projects could have the greatest environmental and economic impact.

Throughout the project, we provided the engineering expertise required to develop the platform, while Rebalance Earth strengthened its operational capabilities and organisational structure. As the product became increasingly central to the business, the company established its own internal technology team and gradually took ownership of future development.

The main improvements delivered included:

  • Strengthened application security and infrastructure to improve reliability, stability, and scalability.
  • Enhanced usability through intuitive filters and comparison tables, enabling faster interpretation of complex datasets.
  • Simplified data management workflows, allowing technical users to update and maintain information more efficiently.
  • Collaborated as a multidisciplinary team to ensure effective delivery and a smooth transition from initial development through to ongoing ownership.

Results

The collaboration has resulted in the creation of a live web platform that supports Rebalance Earth’s day-to-day operations. It provides a single environment for analysing environmental risk data and identifying high-priority locations for climate resilience projects. Internal teams now have access to interactive geospatial insights that significantly improve the speed and quality of their decision-making processes.

In addition to delivering the application itself, the project enabled Rebalance Earth to develop its technological infrastructure as it grew into a more mature organisation.
