Job description
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be working with our media client who produces an incredibly varied range of content: from video, audio, and text; from comedy, drama, news, and educational content; and content produced all around the UK. With so much content being produced, it can be difficult to get the right content to the right person.
We are investing in our Search platform with the aim to improve and modernise it’s search offering to provide more relevant search results to audience members via our discovery engine, machine learning or other forms of relevancy.
We utilise Apache Solr to serve up search results based on keywords and we are looking to expand this functionality into understanding context around content, understanding the user’s requests, a richer search experience, machine learning and personalisation.
Essential Key Skills and Responsibilities
You will:
- have strong search, text mining, NLU and recommendation system skills
- have written ranking functions in custom engines or frameworks like OpenSearch, Apache Solr or Lemur/Indri
- have experience of AWS services such as OpenSearch, Lambda and SageMaker
- have practical experience of using machine learning techniques to improve search capabilities
- knowledge of IR metrics, such as nDCG, ERR and IR evaluation protocols
- be experienced in Java, Kotlin, Python and JavaScript/TypeScript
- have a strong willingness to learn and be a keen team player
- have professional experience of working in projects using Agile development processes
- have experience of writing and taking responsibility for technical documentation
Experience
- A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field or similar work based experience.
- Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer ideally with a focus on media-related projects.
- Very good working knowledge of standard software development frameworks, techniques and methodologies.
- Experience with providing coaching and mentoring
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team, contributing to the development of business scenarios.
- Knowledge of software development tools and technologies.
- You are flexible and curious in your approach
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
