Role Overview

As a Senior Fullstack Developer, ideally with expertise in the media sector, you will play an essential role in delivering and integrating software to form a complete service. You will:

  • plan and lead development on sets of related stories
  • have an understanding of the whole system and take responsibility for teaching this to others
  • work with other disciplines to understand what needs to be built
  • coach and mentor more junior colleagues
  • operate the production services you build
  • find ways to improve system robustness, resilience and stability

Key Skills and Responsibilities

Essential Skills:

  • Predominantly front-end with some back-end experience (70% front end / 30% back end)
  • Highly skilled and experienced in JavaScript, and a deep understanding of CSS (including css animations, grid, flexbox, and browser compatibility of all of these), a11y etc
  • Experience in leading the design and development of software that meets complex product and business needs
  • Experience in writing and maintaining large scale, robust production software in a fast-changing environment with rapid release cycles
  • Understanding and experience of implementing accessibility standards and front end performance
  • Knowledge of map projection types (e.g. marcator, robinson, WGS84, OSGB)
  • Cross browser coding experience

Desirable Skills:

  • Typescript, Node, AWS Experience
  • Experienced adding features to journalistic output on shorthand.com content.
  • Experience in maintaining tools e.g., Lambda/API gateway/3rd party data combinations, and build pipelines (codepipeline/codebuild)
  • Experience of map tiles (e.g., mapbox), experience of using GeoJSON to create/manipulate SVGs or canvas elements. 3D maps (e.g., mapbox / threejs) is a nice to have
  • D3 experience
  • Desired qualities are flexibility, curiosity, collaboration and problem solving.
  • Experience of working in news desirable

You will have a good working knowledge of:

  • Availability and capacity management: you can manage service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets.
  • Development process optimisation: you can identify process optimisation opportunities with guidance and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions.

You will have practitioner level knowledge and experience of:

  • Information security: you can understand information security to be able to design solutions and services with security controls embedded, specifically engineered with mitigation of security threats as a core feature
  • Modern standards approach: you can competently apply a modern standards approach and guide others to do so
  • Programming and build (software engineering): you can collaborate with others when necessary to review specifications. Use the agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools
  • Prototyping: you can approach prototyping as a team activity, actively soliciting prototypes and testing with others, establish design patterns and iterate them, use a variety of prototyping methods and choose the most appropriate
  • Service support: you can identify, locate and fix faults
  • Systems design: you can design systems characterised by medium levels of risk, impact, and business or technical complexity. Select appropriate design standards, methods and tools, and ensure they are applied effectively. Review the systems designs of others to ensure the selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology
  • Systems integration: you can define the integration build, co-ordinate build activities across systems and understand how to undertake and support integration testing activities
  • User Focus: you can collaborate with user researchers and can represent users internally. Explain the difference between user needs and the desires of the user. Champion user research to focus on all users. Prioritise and define approaches to understand the user story, guiding others in doing so. Offer recommendations on the best tools and methods to use

Experience

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field or similar work based experience.
  • Proven experience as a Senior Software Developer ideally with a focus on media-related projects.
  • Very good working knowledge of standard software development frameworks, techniques and methodologies.
  • Experience with providing coaching and mentoring
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, contributing to the development of business scenarios.
  • Knowledge of software development tools and technologies.
  • You are flexible and curious in your approach
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
